A case has been filed against Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Begum and brother-in-law Obaidul Rahman over the alleged abetment of suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
Mariam’s father, S M Masum Billah, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka late Sunday night.
Police subsequently arrested Gazi Nazrul, 75, his first wife Maksuda, 65, and Obaidul, 38, in connection with the case. Tejgaon Division Police Commissioner Md Ibne Mizan confirmed the arrests on Monday morning.
Mariam, 19, was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf at a flat in NAM Bhaban’s Building 5 in the capital on Sunday evening. The flat belongs to Nazrul, who lived there with both his wives.
According to the case statement, Mariam married Nazrul in June under Islamic law. Her family alleged that she had been subjected to physical and mental abuse by Nazrul and his first wife after the marriage and had informed her family about the alleged abuse by phone on several occasions.
The case alleges that Obaidul had directly encouraged the marriage.
Police said Nazrul called Mariam’s father at around 5:30pm on Sunday and asked him to come to the flat immediately. When he arrived with his sister-in-law, Sufia, he found a crowd at the residence and learned that Mariam was hanging inside a locked room.
Police later broke open the door and recovered her body. A purported ”suicide note” was also recovered from her bed.
Police initially suspect that the note may have been written by Mariam. However, investigators said its authenticity will be confirmed only after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submits a forensic report.
The body was sent to the mortuary of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College for autopsy. Teams from the police, CID, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and Detective Branch visited the scene.
