NEW YORK, Sept 22: US President Donald Trump met New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday, setting aside their political differences to discuss housing and the cost of living in the city.
The hour-long meeting came as Trump arrived in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. It was the first time a sitting US president had visited Gracie Mansion in decades.
Trump and Mamdani, who have previously clashed publicly, appeared cordial after the meeting. Trump said he hoped Mamdani would be a “great mayor” and praised him for getting off to a good start.
The two discussed a proposed major housing development at Sunnyside Yard in Queens. Mamdani said the project could create around 12,000 homes and 30,000 jobs, and the two sides agreed to continue discussions between City Hall and the White House.
Mamdani said he was willing to work with anyone who could help reduce the cost of living for New Yorkers, regardless of political differences.
He also raised concerns over the Trump administration’s immigration policies, including the removal of protections for Haitian immigrants.
The meeting marked their third known encounter. They previously met at the White House after Mamdani’s election and again in February, when the mayor promoted federal support for new housing in New York.
Despite their disagreements on several issues, both leaders said they wanted to continue working together on matters affecting New York City.
