Biman Bangladesh Airlines has signed an agreement with US aircraft manufacturer Boeing to purchase 11 additional aircraft as Bangladesh moves to expand its aviation sector and open new international routes, Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin said.
Speaking at a press briefing in New York on Wednesday, Amin said a significant signing ceremony had been held with Boeing, where Biman signed the agreement for the additional aircraft.
He said Bangladesh was purchasing the aircraft based on the needs of its expanding aviation sector and plans to launch new routes.
Bangladesh has maintained a long-standing commercial relationship with Boeing, while discussions with Airbus could also take place depending on the country’s requirements.
The latest agreement comes on top of a $3.7 billion deal signed in April for 14 Boeing aircraft, taking Biman’s planned Boeing acquisitions to 25 aircraft.
Details of the models, price, financing arrangements and delivery schedule for the additional 11 aircraft have not yet been publicly disclosed.
Biman Chairman Rumee A Hossain signed the agreement on behalf of the national flag carrier. Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing Brad McMullen and several senior Bangladeshi and US officials attended the signing ceremony.
Amin also said a Boeing delegation later held a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in New York.
Biman is separately considering a proposal to acquire 10 Airbus aircraft, according to officials.
