At least 600 tourists have been stranded in Sajek Valley in Rangamati’s Baghaichhari upazila after torrential rain disrupted road communication.

The information was confirmed on Wednesday by Rahul Chakma, organising secretary of the Sajek Cottage Owners’ Association.

He said traffic on the Machalong road has remained suspended after floodwater inundated the route. If the water recedes by the afternoon, arrangements will be made to transport the stranded tourists to Khagrachhari.

Rahul Chakma also said resort owners are not charging room rent from the stranded tourists for the time being.

Earlier, authorities announced the temporary closure of all tourist attractions in Sajek Valley until further notice due to severe weather.

The Rangamati district administration also imposed a travel ban on Sajek, citing the safety of tourists. An emergency notice issued on Tuesday evening said continuous heavy rainfall has heightened the risk of landslides and disrupted road communication in several areas.

The notice prohibits tourists, tour operators and the public from entering Sajek Valley, including its waterfalls, hill trails and other high-risk areas, until further notice.

The district administration has urged people to avoid travelling to Sajek unless absolutely necessary and to follow official safety instructions until the situation improves.
