India’s Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a satirical political party, has announced a “Jail Bharo Andolan” or mass-arrest protest in Mumbai after police denied permission for its planned demonstration at Shivaji Park.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced the programme on Monday, saying it would begin on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. The party has been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The party had sought permission to hold a protest at Shivaji Park in Dadar from 3pm to 9pm on October 2. Mumbai Police denied permission, citing legal restrictions on gatherings at the venue and advised the organisers to seek an alternative location.
Dipke criticised the decision on social media, saying the party would launch a “Jail Bharo Andolan” if it was denied the right to protest.
The CJP has raised concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and the electoral process, including the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The party had earlier announced plans for a nationwide agitation beginning in Mumbai on October 2.
