A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on Bestway Group Managing Director Md Mizanur Rahman and his wife, Tania Sultana Tanvi, over allegations of money laundering and acquiring assets beyond known sources of income.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order on Monday following applications filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), said ACC Public Relations Officer Aktarul Islam.

ACC Assistant Director (Money Laundering) Md Selim Mia submitted the applications to the court.

According to the ACC applications, a preliminary review of available information found that Mizanur Rahman and his wife allegedly laundered around Tk200 crore and accumulated assets beyond their known sources of income through fraudulent activities carried out under the guise of their housing business.

The ACC is investigating the allegations.

The applications said a case was filed with Banani Police Station on July 21 under the Money Laundering Prevention Act against Mizanur Rahman, managing director of Bestway Land Properties Ltd, its chairman Tania Sultana Tanvi and director Md Momen.

They were accused of collecting money from customers in the name of allocating plots but failing to hand over the promised plots or refund the money.

The ACC said it had received information that Mizanur Rahman and his wife were attempting to leave the country.

It argued that their departure could hamper the investigation and that restricting their foreign travel was necessary in the interest of the inquiry.
