The Ministry of Labour and Employment has initiated steps to reconstitute the minimum wage board for the readymade garment (RMG) sector, paving the way for a review of workers’ wages.

The ministry has asked the relevant stakeholders to propose three candidates for each position representing the neutral members, garment factory owners and workers.

The board is being formed under Sections 138(2) and 138(4) of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, as amended in 2026.

In a letter signed by Labour Directorate Director Shamima Sultana Bari on Thursday, the concerned parties were asked to submit their nominations promptly, citing the sensitivity of workers’ wages and the need to reconstitute the board without delay.

The letter also instructed the stakeholders to clearly mention each nominee’s designation in their organisation or institution and submit a copy of their national identity card along with three photographs to the Labour Directorate.

The nomination process for representatives of employers and workers, as well as neutral members, will be completed to facilitate the formation of the full board and the start of its work as soon as possible, according to the report.

The initiative was confirmed by Shamim Ehsan, senior vice-president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA).
