BNP reserved-seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Misti met Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Thursday, amid reports that she had been asked to resign from Parliament.

Misti met the Speaker at around 1:45pm and left the Parliament complex after a meeting lasting about five minutes.

Asked by journalists what they had discussed, Misti said, “I came to speak with the Speaker, and I spoke with him.”

When asked whether she had resigned, she did not respond and quickly left. As she was getting into her car, journalists again asked about the matter. She said, “The Speaker called me, and I met him.”

Asked specifically about her resignation, Misti said, “Let the investigation take place.”

When asked whether she had submitted her resignation letter, she replied, “Whatever decision the BNP takes, that will happen.”

No official statement has yet been issued by the Speaker’s office regarding the meeting.

Earlier, BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed Misti to resign as an MP. The prime minister’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibli confirmed the matter to Sara Bangla on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said an investigation was under way into the vandalism at Radda Clinic in Mirpur, Dhaka.

He said a police officer had been found negligent in his duties and was immediately withdrawn, while departmental action had been initiated against him.

The minister said there was no political involvement in the incident, although some of those involved might have political affiliations. He said the suspects had been arrested and legal action was being taken against them.

He added that investigators were examining whether an MP had any involvement in the incident.

Misti had earlier been accused by various media reports of involvement in the attack, looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur.

Misti is one of 36 lawmakers elected to reserved women’s seats allocated to the BNP-led alliance. She took oath on May 3 this year along with other reserved-seat MPs.
