RANGPUR: Three teachers of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) have been demoted following allegations of sexual harassment. The decision was taken at the university’s 123rd Syndicate meeting, the institution’s highest policy-making body.

The teachers are Professor Dr Md Rashidul Islam of the Department of Statistics, Assistant Professor Md Shamim Hossain of the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, and Associate Professor Dr Shakibul Islam of the Department of Disaster Management.

According to university sources, Rashidul Islam was demoted from professor to associate professor, Shamim Hossain from assistant professor to lecturer, and Shakibul Islam from associate professor to assistant professor.

University Registrar (additional charge) Professor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman confirmed the decision on Thursday evening, saying the Syndicate approved the demotions at its meeting on Wednesday following the sexual harassment allegations.

The allegations against the three teachers were raised in separate complaints. A female student had earlier accused Rashidul Islam of tampering with examination marks and threatening her. Screenshots of alleged Messenger conversations between the teacher and the student were later circulated on social media.

In another case, a student of the Department of Disaster Management filed a sexual harassment complaint against Shakibul Islam on November 2, 2025, with the university authorities and its Sexual Harassment Prevention Cell.
