The government has issued the ‘World Teachers’ Day Celebration Policy 2026’ to recognise teachers’ outstanding contributions to nation-building and mark World Teachers’ Day on October 5 every year.
Under the new policy, 100 distinguished teachers from different levels of education will receive special national recognition. Each awardee will receive Tk 100,000 in cash, a crest and a certificate.
According to the policy issued by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Education Ministry, World Teachers’ Day will be observed simultaneously at the upazila, district and national levels, with the division responsible for central coordination.
The policy sets three key objectives: observing the day in line with the UNESCO theme, highlighting teachers’ roles and contributions across society, and honouring the teaching community through recognition of distinguished teachers.
Under Section 5.1 of the policy, the 100 awardees will be selected from different categories. At the primary level, 10 teachers will be honoured—five from general education and five from madrasa education.
At the secondary level, 20 teachers will be selected—10 from general education, five from technical education and five from madrasa education.
At the college level, 25 teachers will be honoured—15 from general education, five from technical education and five from madrasa education.
At the general university level, 20 teachers will be selected, including 15 from public universities and five from private universities.
Among specialised and other institutions, 20 teachers will be honoured: 10 from medical colleges and universities, three from agricultural universities, three from engineering universities, and four from science and technology universities and other specialised universities.
In addition, five teachers selected by the prime minister will receive the honour.
The policy, however, allows the National Steering Committee to change the categories and number of awards if necessary.
It also specifies a selection process. The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, Directorate of Primary Education, Directorate of Madrasa Education and Directorate of Technical Education will prepare panels of three candidates for each category and submit them to the National Steering Committee.
Similarly, the University Grants Commission will form a committee led by the director of its Public University Management Department to prepare panels of three candidates for each university-level category and submit them to the steering committee for final approval.
