US President Donald Trump has appointed National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton to lead a new White House initiative examining the risks and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence (AI). The Wall Street Journal has described Clayton as the administration’s latest “AI czar.”
The task force, officially known as the Superintelligence Force, has been given 120 days to submit a report to the White House. The report will assess the rapidly evolving capabilities of AI, identify potential national security and cybersecurity risks, and recommend steps the US government should take.
According to Reuters, Clayton, who took office as Director of National Intelligence in August, previously served as chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Clayton said the initiative aims to ensure that the United States maintains its global leadership in advanced AI technology while protecting the interests of American citizens.
The task force will also review existing government systems for reporting AI-related data breaches, cyberattacks and other incidents. It will examine how the government can improve its response to such incidents by using existing legal authorities. Source: US media.
