DHAKA: Bangladesh has made its position clear in talks with India to secure its fair share of river waters, Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir has said.

He said the government would work to secure Bangladesh’s rightful share through international law and diplomatic engagement.

He made the remarks at a seminar organised by the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies on Thursday morning (October 8).

The state minister said a government that came to power through an illegal process cannot properly represent the people. He claimed that this was why the Awami League government had failed to secure Bangladesh’s fair share of water from India.

He said Bangladesh was willing to engage with India on water-sharing issues and had already taken necessary initiatives. He expressed hope that a response would be received soon.

Humayun Kabir further said the discussions would pave the way for renewing water-sharing agreements in the future. However, he stressed that the matter was not one-sided and that cooperation and commitment of a similar level from the neighbouring country would also be necessary.
