Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has assured the family of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad of necessary government support for expediting the judicial process and enforcing the verdict in his murder case.

The prime minister gave the assurance when members of Abrar’s family met him at his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday afternoon.

Abrar’s father, Md Barkat Ullah; mother, Rokeya Khatun; younger brother, Abrar Faiyaz; and an uncle and maternal uncle were present at the meeting.

The prime minister spoke with the family members and enquired about their overall wellbeing.

Abrar’s father urged the government to facilitate the completion of the judicial process and enforcement of the verdict at the earliest.

In response, the prime minister said the case is currently pending before the higher judiciary and that the courts will conduct the proceedings independently. He, however, assured the family that the government would provide necessary assistance.

The family also requested the construction of a bridge over the Gorai River in Kushtia.

The prime minister assured them that the bridge would be built and said it would be named after Abrar Fahad.

The family further sought assistance in paving Abrar’s grave and completing construction of a nearby mosque. The prime minister directed the authorities to take steps to complete the mosque’s construction as soon as possible.

The family also called for the arrest of the accused who remain at large and their being brought under the law.

Abrar’s younger brother, Abrar Faiyaz, requested the construction of a residential hall at BUET in Abrar’s name and the inclusion of his case in academic textbooks. The prime minister immediately spoke with the education secretary about the matter.

Abrar’s mother, Rokeya Khatun, urged the authorities to ensure that no educational institution returns to an environment where such incidents could recur.

“I do not want any mother to lose her child in this way,” she said.

Bangladesh Chhatra Dal Central President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir were also present at the meeting.

Abrar Fahad, a BUET student, was killed after being allegedly subjected to torture by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists at Sher-e-Bangla Hall on the night of Oct 6, 2019.

On Dec 8, 2021, a lower court sentenced 20 accused to death and five others to life imprisonment in the murder case.

The High Court upheld the verdict on March 16, 2025. The case is currently pending before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
