Indian Railways has cancelled several mail and express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations on Saturday morning, amid concerns over traffic congestion and security arrangements ahead of a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The Kokroach Janata Party (CJP) and several student organisations have called for a gathering at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Saturday, October 10, as protests against Kumar have continued in the Indian capital in recent days.
In a directive issued on Friday, the Railways said trains departing their originating stations after 2pm on Friday and scheduled to reach either station between 4am and 2pm on Saturday would be cancelled.
The directive, issued by the Railway Board’s Coaching Directorate, cited the possibility of severe traffic congestion on roads around the two stations as the reason for the decision.
Eastern Railway confirmed that the Howrah–New Delhi Rajdhani Express and the Sealdah–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, both scheduled to depart on Friday, had been cancelled.
However, the railway directive did not explicitly establish a direct link between the cancellations and the planned protest.
