A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southern Panama on Monday, following a powerful 7.7-magnitude quake that hit the country on Friday, raising concerns over continued seismic activity.

The latest tremor struck at around 6:20pm local time at a depth of 10 kilometres, approximately 18 kilometres west of Río Grande, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage from the latest earthquake, the Associated Press reported.

The tremor came after two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 6.6 in magnitude, struck Panama on Friday, damaging buildings and roads and prompting evacuations in several areas.

The earlier quakes injured at least 27 people and damaged nearly 900 homes, while authorities recorded hundreds of aftershocks.

The central provinces of Los Santos, Coclé, Veraguas and Herrera were among the worst-affected areas.

The government declared a national state of emergency to facilitate relief operations and repairs to damaged infrastructure.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as seismic activity persists across the country.
