DHAKA: Bangladesh has 521,922 vacant posts across various government institutions, the Ministry of Public Administration has informed a parliamentary standing committee.
The information was presented in a report submitted to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Public Administration at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday.
According to committee sources, the ministry’s 2026 report shows that government institutions across the country have a total of 1,986,272 sanctioned posts. Of these, 1,464,350 are currently occupied, leaving 521,922 positions vacant.
The meeting was also informed that the government had adopted short-, medium- and long-term action plans to fill the vacancies in line with its election manifesto.
The government initially aimed to fill 2,879 vacant posts during the first 180 days after taking office. Of these, 2,061 positions have been filled.
Sources said a member of the opposition alleged at the meeting that an individual who had passed the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination had been denied appointment because of their political affiliation. The member also alleged that some officials had been transferred for political reasons.
Committee recommends action against non-cooperation
The parliamentary committee recommended that the ministry identify individuals who obstruct or neglect the current government’s initiatives to implement the policy of “Bangladesh Above All” and take appropriate action against them.
The committee also recommended investigating projects experiencing delays, according to a press release issued by the Parliament Secretariat after the meeting.
The committee was briefed on the activities of departments and agencies under the Ministry of Public Administration. It advised officials to coordinate their work at the field level to implement the 31-point reform agenda aimed at reforming the state.
Committee Chairman Saeed Ahmed said any legal, administrative or practical obstacles to implementing decisions should be brought before the committee. Officials should disclose all necessary information, relevant documents and the actual circumstances rather than conceal any issues, he said.
He stressed the need to make public services simpler and faster, ensure accountability and use digital services and information technology effectively to save citizens’ time, money and effort. He also called for appropriate action against irregularities.
“We must move beyond our previous mindset and work with accountability, transparency and a spirit of cooperation to solve problems,” the chairman said.
“Do not forget that you are employees of the Republic. You do not belong to any party, individual or group. Do not consider this committee an adversary; it is a committee for all of us,” he added.
The meeting was chaired by Saeed Ahmed. Among those attending were State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari and committee members ABM Ashraf Uddin, Shahjahan Chowdhury, Amirul Islam Khan, Fakhr Uddin Ahmed, Rehena Akter and Md Nurul Islam.
