An Indian air ambulance travelling from Agartala to Kolkata made an emergency landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Sunday after a mechanical fault caused its door to open mid-flight.

The female patient on board, identified as 56-year-old Anjana Bhowmik, was taken to Kurmitola Multicare Specialised Hospital, where doctors declared her dead at 4:40pm.

Airport officials said the aircraft developed a cabin pressurisation problem at an altitude of 12,000 feet, causing its main door to become partially open.

The pilot declared an emergency and sought permission to land in Dhaka.

The aircraft landed safely at around 1:40pm. Two pilots and five other people, including the patient, a doctor, a paramedic and two attendants, were on board. The other occupants were reported safe.

The aircraft was operated by India’s SKB Infracon Pvt Ltd. The exact cause of the patient’s death was not immediately known.
