Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested Abul Kalam Azad Lenin, known as ‘Shooter Lenin’, an expelled BNP leader and one of the prime accused in the attack, looting and vandalism at Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur, Dhaka.
Lenin, 46, was arrested in Mirsarai, Chattogram, on Monday (October 19), Mohammad Rakib Khan, deputy commissioner of the DB’s Mirpur Division, confirmed.
A DB team from the Mirpur division detained him during a drive based on a tip-off earlier in the day. Lenin is a resident of the capital’s Shah Ali area.
Police said Lenin was accused in a case filed with Shah Ali Police Station over the attack on the health centre. He has also been accused of involvement in extortion, illegal occupation and other criminal activities in Mirpur.
More than 25 people have so far been arrested in connection with the case, most of them leaders and activists of the local BNP and its affiliated organisations, police said.
Rakib Khan said investigators had identified at least 40 people allegedly directly involved in the incident. Operations are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects.
The attack took place on the night of September 25, when a group of people allegedly vandalised and looted the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1 before demolishing parts of the facility using heavy machinery.
Amid widespread criticism over the incident, reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti resigned.
