BARGUNA: Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni has called for collective efforts by families, society and relevant authorities to protect adolescent girls’ reproductive health, ensure their continued education and prevent child marriage.

“Alongside strengthening women economically through the Family Card, initiatives have been taken to expand educational opportunities for girls and provide stipends. An environment must be ensured in which girls can develop leadership skills through education,” he said.

He added that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had taken various initiatives to make women economically self-reliant and empower them.

Moni made the remarks while addressing a workshop titled “Reproductive Health and Protection of Adolescent Girls’ Health and Prevention of Child Marriage” as the chief guest at the Patharghata Upazila Parishad auditorium in Barguna on Sunday.

He said awareness of reproductive health, access to healthcare services and continued education were essential to ensure the healthy development and a secure future for adolescent girls.

“Families and society must also be made aware of the harmful effects of child marriage,” he added.

The chief whip also reiterated his firm stance against drugs, extortion, land grabbing and terrorism in Patharghata.

The workshop was organised by the Strengthening Parliament’s Capacity in Integration of Population and Development Issues (SPCPD) project of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Patharghata Upazila Administration.
