DHAKA: Bangladesh has stressed the need to strengthen cooperation with Türkiye on climate change and sustainable development as the two countries prepare to participate in the upcoming COP31 climate conference.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam made the remarks when Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Ramis Sen paid a courtesy call on her at her office in Dhaka on Sunday, according to a foreign ministry press release issued on Monday.

During the meeting, the ambassador briefed the state minister on Türkiye’s preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), scheduled to be held in Antalya from November 9 to 20.

He also discussed the World Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for November 11 and 12, and Bangladesh’s participation in the event.

Shama congratulated Türkiye on hosting COP31 and informed the ambassador that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would attend the summit.

She expressed hope that the leaders of Bangladesh and Türkiye would have an opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the conference.

The state minister emphasised the importance of closer bilateral cooperation to address climate change and promote sustainable development.
