Tourist arrivals in Cox’s Bazar remain strong during the Durga Puja holidays, although a deadly fire at TupTup Resort has reduced bookings at resorts and cottages along the Marine Drive.
The October 17 fire at the resort in Ukhiya killed 10 tourists, raising concerns over the safety of bamboo- and wood-built accommodation. Many visitors are now opting for hotels in Cox’s Bazar town.
While some Marine Drive resorts are struggling with cancellations, hotel owners say tourist arrivals have picked up over the past two days. More than 90,000 tourists were staying in hotels and guesthouses in the town on Monday, according to the Marine Drive Hotel-Resort Owners Association.
Association General Secretary Mukim Khan said nearly 80% of rooms at more than 80 resorts and cottages along Marine Drive were vacant following the tragedy.
In contrast, bookings at city hotels remain high. More than 95% of rooms at over 20 star-rated hotels have reportedly been booked, while occupancy at mid-range hotels and guesthouses has reached around 80%.
Tourism businesses expect at least 10 lakh visitors during the 10-day holiday period through October 25, potentially generating Tk900–1,000 crore in business for the tourism sector.
Cox’s Bazar Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Abdul Shukkur said the extended holidays could provide a major boost to hotels, restaurants and other tourism-related businesses.
Meanwhile, the district administration and law enforcement agencies have stepped up preparations to ensure tourists’ safety and prevent harassment during the holidays and the upcoming Durga Puja idol immersion celebrations.
A case has been filed against 23 people over the resort fire, and one suspect has been arrested as the investigation continues.
