At least 11 people suffered burn injuries in a boiler-related fire at a factory in Madhabdi, Narsingdi, on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred at Kalibari Dyeing and Finishing Mill in the Madhabdi area on October 21, when the factory’s boiler reportedly malfunctioned and caught fire during repair work.
According to local sources, the mill owner called technicians to repair the faulty boiler. During the operation, a loud bang was heard, followed by a fire that spread through the area, leaving several people injured.
The injured were taken to local hospitals before some were transferred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital for treatment.
Five burn victims were admitted to the DMCH burn unit. Doctors reported that two patients, Jamal and Tipu, suffered burns to 60 percent and 90 percent of their bodies, respectively.
They were transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) because of the severity of their injuries.
The other patients received treatment and were kept under observation, while some were discharged after receiving initial treatment.
Four fire service units responded to the incident and brought the blaze under control after nearly an hour, according to Narsingdi Fire Service and Civil Defence officials.
Police visited the scene following the incident. Authorities said the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage would be determined through an investigation.
