One person was killed and eight others were injured in an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, the country’s civil aviation authority has said.

According to Al Jazeera, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said in a statement on Wednesday that all the injured, whose conditions ranged from minor to serious, were immediately taken to hospital for treatment.

The incident comes amid reports of attacks targeting critical infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.

Earlier in the day, the Saudi Ministry of Energy said the country’s air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed a drone as it attempted to strike a facility at the Shaybah oil field operated by Saudi Aramco.

Two people were killed in that incident, according to the ministry.

The latest incidents have raised concerns over the security of key aviation and energy infrastructure in the kingdom.

King Fahd International Airport, located near Dammam in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, is a major international aviation hub.

Saudi authorities have not provided further details about the circumstances of the airport attack in the information cited by Al Jazeera.
