Police have arrested 28 people during a special operation at Ghuntighar Railgate in Dayaganj, under the capital’s Gandaria area, following controversy over a recent anti-drug raid conducted by former state minister Ishraque Hossain.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Gandaria Police Station conducted the operation on Friday, October 23, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Niaz Mehedi.

The arrested individuals are allegedly involved in various criminal activities. A child allegedly involved in a clash was also arrested, according to police.

Legal proceedings against those arrested are under way, the police official said.

The Ghuntighar area near Gandaria Railway Station recently came into the spotlight after Ishraque, then state minister for liberation war affairs, took part in an operation at a suspected drug spot on October 17.

A video posted on his Facebook page showed him brandishing a firearm and moving towards people during the operation, triggering widespread criticism and questions over his conduct.

Following the controversy, Ishraque resigned from the cabinet on Monday, October 19.

The latest police operation comes amid continued attention on the area and efforts to address alleged criminal activities there.
