Saudi Arabia said it intercepted two ballistic missiles launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement towards the Mecca and Medina regions on Saturday, with debris falling in several locations across the kingdom.

According to Saudi Civil Defence, fragments from the intercepted missiles fell in Wadi Al-Mughammas in Mecca, the Al-Nuzha neighbourhood of Jeddah, Wadi Jalil in Taif and the Masturah area of Rabigh Governorate.

Emergency teams responded to reports of falling debris, and authorities said established safety procedures had been followed. No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

However, the Houthis denied targeting the two holy cities, insisting that their operations were directed at Saudi oil facilities and military installations.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had targeted several Saudi facilities, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, an Aramco facility in Yanbu, the Rabigh oil refinery and crude oil pumping stations. The group also claimed to have targeted other airports and military sites.

The Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted two ballistic missiles aimed at Yanbu and Taif.

Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm whether the Houthis’ claimed attacks on oil facilities and other targets had caused any damage.

The latest escalation comes amid renewed fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, following the breakdown of a United Nations-brokered truce that had largely halted cross-border attacks since 2022.

The developments have heightened security concerns across the region, with Saudi authorities issuing alerts over potential aerial threats in several western areas of the kingdom.
