Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a two-day programme demanding justice for those involved in the killings during the October 28, 2006, violence in Dhaka, when protesters wielding sticks and oars attacked political opponents.
The programme includes a discussion meeting in Dhaka on October 27 and protests, discussion meetings and prayer sessions across the country on October 28.
Jamaat Secretary General and former lawmaker Mia Golam Porwar announced the programme in a statement on Saturday.
In the statement, Porwar described the violence on Dhaka’s streets on October 28, 2006, as a “dark and disgraceful chapter” in the country’s political history.
He said the killings and disorder that day had laid the groundwork for what he described as two decades of authoritarianism, the destruction of democracy and the deprivation of citizens’ rights.
As the 20th anniversary of the incident approaches, he expressed regret that those responsible have yet to face trial.
Porwar urged the government to immediately arrest those allegedly involved in the killings and bring them to justice.
Under the announced programme, a discussion meeting will be held in Dhaka on October 27, with the Jamaat ameer scheduled to attend as the chief guest.
On October 28, the party’s branches across the country will organise protest rallies, discussion meetings and prayer sessions.
Porwar called on all party units to organise and implement the programmes. He also urged people from all walks of life, including farmers, workers, students and the general public, to participate and help make the programme successful.
