The body of Farzana Islam, a Pharmacy Department student at Comilla University, was recovered from her husband’s home in the Signboard area of Fatullah, Narayanganj, on Saturday night.

Police have taken her husband, Nazmul Islam, into custody for questioning. They initially suspect suicide.

Nazmul was a student of the Pharmacy Department at Comilla University in the 2016-17 academic session. Farzana was enrolled in the department’s undergraduate programme for the 2019-20 session and postgraduate programme for the 2024-25 session.

Farzana’s brother, Ariful Islam, said she married Nazmul, a senior student in the same department, around three years ago.

He alleged that Nazmul had subjected her to abuse over various issues since their marriage. Nazmul was initially unemployed, but after securing a job, his financial demands increased, and he continued to pressure and abuse Farzana for money.

Ariful said he spoke to his sister on the evening of the incident and noticed nothing unusual in her conversation. He was informed of her death by phone between 10pm and 10:30pm.

Additional Superintendent of Police in Narayanganj Tarek Al Mehedi said preliminary findings suggested that Farzana had died by suicide following marital discord.

Police have taken her husband into custody, and proceedings to file a case for abetment of suicide are underway, he added.
