Police have filed a fresh application seeking a seven-day remand for questioning Dilip Agarwala, managing director of Diamond World and a member of the Awami League’s central subcommittee on industry and commerce, in an attempted murder case filed with Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka over the anti-discrimination student movement.

Sub-Inspector Sumon Mia, the investigation officer of the case, filed the remand application on Sunday (October 25).

On October 21, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque granted Agarwala a four-day remand in the case. After the remand ended, he was produced before the court on Sunday, and police sought another seven days for questioning.

Shamsuddoha Sumon, an additional public prosecutor at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court, confirmed the matter.

Earlier, on October 20, another court granted a one-day remand for questioning Agarwala in a case accusing him of buying and selling illegal gold and diamonds worth Tk6.78 billion through smuggling and money laundering.

He was subsequently shown arrested in the murder case of Abdul Jabbar filed with Uttara West Police Station and placed on a four-day remand.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Agarwala in Banani on the evening of October 19.

According to the case statement, on August 5, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement, the accused allegedly engaged in rioting and opened fire while armed with lethal weapons near BNS Centre on the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway under Uttara West Police Station.

One of the bullets allegedly fired by the accused struck complainant Abdul Jabbar in the lower back, just below the spine. His colleagues rescued him and admitted him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

He later received prolonged treatment at PG Hospital. After recovering, he filed the case with the police station.

Agarwala was previously arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), now known as the Special Response Battalion (SRB), on September 3, 2024.

He was subsequently shown arrested in several murder cases. After securing bail in those cases, he was released from prison on October 1, 2025.
