Fakhrul Alam, father of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal leader S M Shahriar Alam Samya, testified in court on Wednesday in the murder case, saying he found his son’s body at a hospital after learning that he had been stabbed.

Fakhrul Alam gave his testimony before the court of 19th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Mominul Islam in Dhaka. After the testimony, the court fixed November 18 for the next hearing, bench assistant Ashraful Amin said.

In his testimony, Fakhrul Alam said Samya was a master’s final-year student at Dhaka University.

“At around 12:30am on May 13, 2025, we received a phone call saying that some miscreants had stabbed my son. I immediately went to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and found his body in the morgue,” he said.

He told the court that Samya had gone to Suhrawardy Udyan with his friends Bayezid and Rafi for food at around 11:30pm. While returning, they reached the northwestern corner of the park’s open-air stage at around 12:05am when a group of miscreants allegedly stabbed Samya.

Lawyers for the accused cross-examined the witness after his testimony.

With Fakhrul Alam’s testimony, three witnesses have now testified in the case. Samya’s elder brother, S A M Shariful Alam, testified on August 8, while his fellow student Ashraful Alam Rafi testified on September 27.

The court framed charges against seven accused on May 3, formally starting the trial. The accused are Mehedi Hasan, Mohammad Rabbi alias Kabutor Rabbi, Mohammad Ripon alias Akash, Nahid Hasan Papel, Mohammad Hridoy Islam, Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid Sohag alias Lombu Sohag, and Mohammad Robin. They are all alleged drug dealers.

Rabbi and Hridoy are absconding, while the other accused are out on bail.

Samya, 25, was stabbed inside Suhrawardy Udyan at around 11pm on May 13 last year while travelling through the park on a motorcycle. His friends took him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around midnight, where doctors declared him dead.

A student of the university’s Institute of Education and Research from the 2018–19 academic session, Samya was the literature and publications secretary of the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall unit of Chhatra Dal.

His elder brother Shariful Islam filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station on the morning of May 14, accusing 10–12 people.

After completing the investigation, Detective Branch Inspector Mohammad Akhtar Morshed of the Ramna division submitted the charge sheet to the court on October 30 last year.

According to the charge sheet, Samya was allegedly stabbed to death because he had objected to the sale of cannabis inside Suhrawardy Udyan.
