A Dhaka court on Sunday formally framed charges against 21 accused in the sensational murder of scrap metal trader Lal Chand, popularly known as Sohag, marking the official start of the trial.
Judge of the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court of Dhaka passed the order under sections 302 (murder), 143 (unlawful assembly), and 34 (common intention) of the Penal Code. The court also cancelled the bail of the accused who were out on bail, while allowing three others to remain on bail as they had secured relief from the High Court.
Following the hearing, counsel for the complainant, Ziaul Haque, said the framing of charges formally initiated the judicial proceedings in the widely discussed murder case.
According to the case documents, Sohag was brutally beaten to death with bricks and stones in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital in Old Dhaka on July 9 last year. Videos of the daylight killing circulated widely on social media, sparking nationwide outrage.
