The government aims to generate 3,000-4,000 megawatts of electricity from solar power by next summer to keep power shortages and public suffering at manageable levels, with rooftop solar panels being considered the easiest way to achieve the target.

State Minister for Power and Energy Anindya Islam Amit announced the plan at a consultation meeting on installing solar power systems at 31 public universities, held at the University Grants Commission (UGC) building in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Monday.

He said the government was working to ensure that people do not face the level of hardship they experienced during the current summer, or that any disruption remains within tolerable limits.

“We want to generate 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts of electricity from solar panels by next summer. Rooftop solar is the easiest solution in this regard,” he said.

Power Secretary Mirana Mahrook, who also attended the meeting, said the government wanted to make next summer more bearable for people and was therefore prioritising solar power generation.
