The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has initiated a project to install an 8.42-megawatt-peak (MWp) rooftop solar power plant on unused administrative buildings and sheds to promote clean energy and sustainable port operations.
The CPA signed an agreement with Greener Parvetix Initiative Limited (GGI) on Monday, October 19, 2026, to implement the project. CPA Chairman Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman and GGI Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Noore Alam signed the agreement, according to an official press release.
The project will follow an operating expenditure (OPEX) model, under which GGI will finance the entire solar infrastructure without requiring any upfront capital investment from the CPA.
GGI will be responsible for engineering design, equipment procurement, construction and long-term maintenance of the solar power plant. Under the agreement, the company will supply clean electricity to the port for 20 years.
The initiative is expected to reduce the port’s dependence on conventional grid electricity and save nearly Tk 100 crore in electricity costs over the project period.
The plant will also feature a net-metering system, allowing surplus solar electricity to be fed into the national grid.
The project is aimed at advancing clean energy use in maritime logistics while supporting national renewable energy policies and broader climate goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.
By utilising previously unused rooftop space, the initiative is expected to help reduce the port’s carbon footprint without requiring upfront public investment.
