Saudi Arabia has yet to respond to Bangladesh’s diplomatic letters seeking details about the execution of two Bangladeshi nationals in Makkah, despite repeated requests from Dhaka.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam told reporters at the Foreign Ministry on Monday that Bangladesh was still awaiting a response from the Saudi authorities.

She said the Bangladesh mission in Saudi Arabia was maintaining communication with the authorities and hoped to receive information soon.

Saudi authorities announced on October 14 that the death sentences of two Bangladeshis, a man and a woman, had been carried out in Makkah over alleged immoral activities inside a mosque.

The executions reportedly took place without prior notification to the Bangladesh government or its diplomatic mission.

Following media reports, the Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah sent a diplomatic letter to the Saudi authorities on October 15, seeking details about the cases.

The Foreign Ministry also summoned the Saudi ambassador in Dhaka and handed him another copy of the letter.

Bangladesh has sought information about the allegations, court verdicts, judicial proceedings, execution procedures and the whereabouts of the bodies.

However, no formal response had been received as of Monday, November 2.
