Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished career spanning more than a decade across all three formats.

The 38-year-old confirmed his decision on the Final Word podcast after being overlooked for Australia’s upcoming T20 international series against England in November.

Maxwell had previously retired from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in June 2025 but had kept the door open for a return to the T20 international side.

His final appearance for Australia came against Oman during the T20 World Cup in February this year.

During his international career, Maxwell represented Australia in 286 matches, including seven Tests, 149 ODIs and 130 T20 internationals. He scored 7,226 runs and claimed 136 wickets across the three formats.

He was an integral member of Australia’s successful campaigns in the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups, as well as the 2021 T20 World Cup.

One of the most memorable moments of his career came during the 2023 ODI World Cup when he produced a remarkable unbeaten 201 off 128 balls against Afghanistan.

Despite suffering severe cramps, he guided Australia to a dramatic three-wicket victory after the team had slumped to 91 for seven while chasing 292 runs.

Maxwell also holds a joint record with India’s Rohit Sharma for the most centuries in T20 internationals, with five each.

Speaking about his retirement, Maxwell said he had hoped to receive a farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during Australia’s upcoming T20I series against England.

However, he understood the selectors’ decision to focus on younger players ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

Although he has retired from international cricket and state-level List A and first-class cricket, Maxwell will continue playing franchise T20 cricket, including for the Melbourne Stars in Australia’s Big Bash League.

He is contracted with the club until the end of the 2027-28 season.
