Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former lawmaker Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman was released from jail on bail on Tuesday in a case filed over obstructing government activities at an airport, misbehaving with officials and assaulting a security officer.
He walked out of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Tuesday morning.
Several senior Jamaat leaders welcomed him outside the prison with flowers, including Central Executive Council member and Dhaka North city unit Ameer Mohammad Selim Uddin, Central Executive Council member Mobarak Hossain, Dhaka South city unit Secretary Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud, MP, and other party leaders.
The High Court bench led by Justice KM Zahid Sarwar granted him interim bail on Sunday (November 1).
The state subsequently filed an appeal seeking a stay on the bail order. However, on Monday (November 2), Appellate Division Chamber Judge Justice Md Rezaul Haque rejected the state’s application, upholding the High Court’s bail order and clearing the way for his release.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his residence in the capital’s Cantonment area on October 2.
The following day, a court granted police one day’s remand. After completion of the remand, he was sent to jail on October 4.
His bail petitions were rejected twice by the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, prompting him to seek relief from the High Court.
Akhtaruzzaman had been involved in BNP politics for a long time. He was expelled from the party for the fifth time on February 20, 2022, over alleged activities violating party discipline.
He later joined Jamaat-e-Islami on December 13, 2025, ahead of the 13th parliamentary election.
