Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Bangabhaban on Tuesday to pay a courtesy call on President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The Prime Minister’s Press Wing confirmed the meeting on Tuesday (November 3).
Earlier in the morning, Tarique inaugurated the first-ever Bangladesh Solar Expo 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
Addressing the event, he said the country must turn sunlight into a valuable resource, adding that meeting the growing demand for electricity would not be difficult if development partners and the public worked together.
He said the previous government had made the country’s energy system heavily dependent on imports. However, instead of spending time criticising the previous administration’s decisions in the power sector, the current government was focusing on finding alternative solutions.
Describing solar power as an important alternative to address uncertainties in the energy sector caused by global instability, the prime minister called for coordinated efforts by public and private organisations to harness the sector’s potential.
He also said the government had allocated Tk6,000 crore separately for the development of solar power.
Highlighting plans to expand solar energy use in agriculture, Tarique said 17,000 irrigation pumps in the Barind region would be brought under solar power within the next year.
The government would also introduce solar-powered agricultural production systems at district and upazila levels, he added.
The prime minister also urged expatriate Bangladeshis to invest in the solar power sector and called on everyone to act responsibly to prevent electricity wastage.
