India is closely monitoring the ongoing labour unrest in Bangladesh, Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said.

Speaking at a regular media briefing in New Delhi on Tuesday, Jaiswal said India was following developments surrounding the garment workers’ protests.

“We have been following the situation in Bangladesh. There have been developments there, and we continue to follow those developments,” he said.

Asked about India-Bangladesh relations amid the evolving regional situation, Jaiswal reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to maintaining positive, constructive and forward-looking ties with Dhaka.

He said India wanted to work towards strengthening bilateral relations and remained committed to that objective.

On the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, Jaiswal said the India-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) was the established mechanism for discussions on all transboundary rivers, including the Ganges. However, he said he had no further updates to share.

Regarding a possible visit to India by Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Jaiswal said New Delhi had already extended an invitation and would share updates when available.

The remarks came as garment workers’ protests over wage demands entered their fourth consecutive day, disrupting factory operations and transport in several industrial areas of Bangladesh.
