ILO chief arrives in Dhaka on two-day visit

International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo arrived in Dhaka on Sunday for a two-day official visit, during which he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury.

According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Houngbo will pay a courtesy call on Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury on Sunday. On Monday, he is scheduled to hold a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The visit follows a recent meeting between the ILO chief and the Bangladesh labour minister in Geneva, Switzerland. During that meeting, Ariful Haque invited Houngbo to visit Bangladesh and sought the ILO’s continued support in expanding employment opportunities and strengthening labour rights in the country.

In response, the ILO Director-General reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s efforts to promote employment and improve labour rights, while commending the long-standing partnership between the ILO and Bangladesh.
