KUWAIT CITY, July 22: Kuwait has summoned Iran’s ambassador and lodged a formal protest after a Kuwaiti oil tanker was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, in an incident that injured several crew members and heightened tensions in the Gulf.
According to Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry, Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Al-Mashaan called in Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Totonchi on Tuesday and handed him an official protest note over the attack on the tanker Keifan, which occurred on Monday evening as the vessel was passing through the strategic waterway.
The ministry described the strike as a violation of international law and an unacceptable threat to freedom of navigation and maritime security. It urged Iran to respect international obligations and ensure the safety of commercial shipping in one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.
Several crew members aboard the tanker were injured in the attack, though no fatalities have been reported. The vessel sustained damage, prompting renewed concerns over the security of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy exports.
The incident comes amid escalating regional tensions and follows a series of attacks affecting shipping and energy infrastructure across the Gulf, raising fears of further disruptions to international trade and oil supplies.
