The High Court has issued a rule asking why the service charges imposed by mobile financial service (MFS) providers bKash, Nagad and Rocket should not be declared illegal, unconstitutional and contrary to law.
The rule was issued on Sunday by a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Mujibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Rezaul Karim following a public interest writ petition.
The court also asked why the authorities should not be directed to enact a separate law governing mobile financial services to regulate service charges, ensure consumer protection and strengthen accountability.
The rule specifically calls for ensuring reasonable, fair and affordable service charges for low-income people and those without access to conventional banking services.
The Finance Secretary, Posts and Telecommunications Secretary, Governor of Bangladesh Bank and other relevant respondents have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Advocate Obaidullah Al Mamun Sakib represented the petitioner during the hearing. He had filed the writ petition in the public interest.
