Three children, including two sisters, drowned while bathing in a pond in Bagherpara upazila of Jashore on Friday.

The incident occurred around noon in Jamdia village under Jamdia Union of the upazila.

The deceased were Fahima Khatun, 10, daughter of Ashikur Rahman; and sisters Lamia Akter, 13, and Sultana Akter, 10.

Locals said the three children went to a pond near their homes to bathe before Friday prayers. At one point, they drowned.

Family members and local residents later rescued them and rushed them to Bagherpara Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.

Neighbour Mahbur Rahman said the children went to bathe in the pond of Ikram Molla at around 11:30am. When their grandmother could not find them, she went to the pond with others and found the children floating beneath the steps.

Dr Masnun Abdullah, the duty doctor at Bagherpara Upazila Health Complex, said the three children were brought to the hospital at around 12:50pm with no heartbeat. ECG examinations found no signs of life.

Bagherpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shah Jalal Alam said the pond appeared to have been largely abandoned. Police are processing legal action over the incident.
