At least seven women were killed and several others injured in a stampede at a temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district in India on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at the Ashok Dham Temple, where a large number of devotees had gathered.

Temple official Shailendra Kumar said panic spread after rumours that an electricity pole had collapsed and live wires had fallen on devotees.

The rumour triggered a sudden rush among women standing in a queue. Several people lost their balance and fell on one another, resulting in multiple deaths at the scene.

The death toll later rose to seven. The injured were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals. Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of people injured and are working to determine the figure.

Panic spread across the temple premises following the incident. Police and administrative officials rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control.

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed grief over the incident in a social media post. He said he had directed the administration to ensure prompt and proper treatment for those injured.

Initial reports suggest that the panic was triggered by the rumour of a collapsed electricity pole and fallen wires. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident and how the situation escalated so quickly.
