Rajbari: A fire in the Baharpur Bazar area of Baliakandi upazila in Rajbari district destroyed an oil mill, a jute warehouse and around 10 shops and business establishments.
The fire reportedly originated at the oil mill owned by Md Abdul Jalil Molla near the Baharpur Bazar bus stand at around 2:45am on Monday. It quickly spread to nearby shops and warehouses.
The fire completely damaged around 10 business establishments, including Jalil Molla’s oil mill, his son’s pharmacy, Hitu Molla’s jute warehouse, Milton Molla’s jute storage facility, Congress Biswas’s grocery shop and Suman’s pharmacy.
On receiving the news, members of the Baliakandi Fire Station rushed to the scene. With the assistance of the upazila executive officer, the officer-in-charge of Baliakandi Police Station, local traders and residents, they brought the fire under control after around two and a half hours of efforts.
Saluddin Laskar, acting station officer of Baliakandi Fire Service, said they received the report at around 3:05am and reached the scene at approximately 3:15am. The fire was brought under control after two and a half hours of efforts, although their operations were still ongoing.
The exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage could not be determined immediately.
