An elderly man died on Sunday morning after falling into an empty elevator shaft at an under-construction building in the Sultanganj Tali Office area of Hazaribagh in Dhaka.

The deceased was identified as Subhash Chandra Paul, 73, a former teacher at Dhanmondi Government Boys’ High School.

Subhash was rescued in critical condition and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 8:30am.

His son, Krishna Gopal Paul, said they live in their own flat on the seventh floor of the under-construction building and that his father had gone out for his usual morning walk.

“Construction workers at the building informed us about the accident this morning. They rescued him and took him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” he said.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, said the body had been kept at the hospital morgue.

He added that Hazaribagh police were investigating the incident.
