Four members of the same family remained missing 23 hours after a trawler sank in the Meghna River in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, officials said on Friday.
Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of the Narayanganj Fire Service, confirmed the development around noon.
The four missing people were identified as Helal Uddin, 55, Sajib, 24, Samia, 17, and Samin, 5. They were residents of Homna in Cumilla and were travelling towards Baidyerbazar to attend a wedding at a relative’s house.
The trawler sank after being caught in a storm at Sonamayi area around 2pm on Thursday.
A nearby trawler belonging to Aman Company rushed to the scene and rescued nine passengers alive. A woman, Rayesa Begum, 40, was also recovered dead. Four others remained missing.
Fire Service and local residents launched a search operation, but the operation was suspended at night due to darkness.
The Fire Service resumed the search around 7am on Friday, with three divers taking part in the operation. No trace of the missing passengers had been found by noon.
Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer Asif Al Zinat said one Fire Service team and two Coast Guard teams had been working at the scene since Thursday night.
“The search operation is continuing to locate the missing people,” he said.
