Three members of a Bangladeshi family, including a mother and her two children, were killed in a road accident in Saudi Arabia while travelling from Riyadh to Makkah to perform Umrah.
The accident occurred at around 3:00 pm Bangladesh time on Thursday, Saudi media reports and family members said.
The deceased were identified as Tania Tahmina Rina, 45, her son Tasbik, 20, and daughter Zara, 15.
Rina’s husband, Shafiqul Islam Khokon, and their elder son, Nabil, sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at a hospital.
Rina was the third daughter of the late Nazimuddin Molla, a former chairman of Atghar Union in Saltha upazila of Faridpur. Her husband’s family hails from Bhairab in Kishoreganj.
Rina’s cousin, Nasim Ahmed Kabir, said the family of five had left Riyadh on Thursday morning for Makkah to perform Umrah. About 300 kilometres into the journey, their private car was involved in a road accident, leaving three family members dead at the scene and two others critically injured.
Her brother, Touhid Murad, said the family’s vehicle was struck from behind by a large vehicle with great force while they were travelling to Makkah.
“The impact killed my sister, my younger nephew and my niece on the spot. My brother-in-law and my other nephew were injured and are now undergoing treatment at a hospital,” he said.
