- Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar on Friday urged the government to abandon what he described as the “destructive path of fascism” and fully implement the July Charter, warning that failure to do so could trigger a fresh mass movement.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled “The 2024 Mass Uprising: Expectations and Achievements” at the Jashore District Council auditorium, Parwar said the July 2024 uprising was a nationwide movement involving students and people from all walks of life, rather than any single political party, individual or group.
He said the participants had envisioned a democratic, discrimination-free, humane and corruption-free Bangladesh, along with a new state structure.
Referring to the reform process, Parwar said six reform commissions were formed and representatives of 33 political parties held 72 meetings, submitting 166 reform proposals. He claimed that consensus was reached on 84 reform issues before the July Charter was signed at Parliament Plaza.
According to him, the process was followed by parliamentary elections and a referendum under a presidential order issued on November 13, 2025.
Parwar alleged that although ruling party lawmakers took the oath as members of parliament, they did not take the oath as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.
He further claimed that the government had filed a writ petition seeking to invalidate the July Charter and proposed cancelling the referendum, while remaining silent on the issues in Parliament.
Questioning the government’s constitutional arguments, Parwar said that if the presidential order was rejected, the legitimacy of the current Parliament would also be called into question.
He also alleged that the BNP had submitted notes of dissent on 12 to 14 key reform proposals, warning that failure to implement the reforms could create conditions for the return of authoritarian rule.
The programme was organised by the 11-party alliance to mark the second anniversary of the 2024 mass uprising. It was chaired by Jashore district Jamaat Ameer and Jashore-4 lawmaker Prof Golam Rasul.
Among the special guests were Jamaat Central Executive Council member Mobarak Hossain, Supreme Court lawyer Barrister ASM Shahriar Kabir, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish Joint Secretary General Maulana Sharif Saidur Rahman, and NCP Jashore district chief coordinator Mohammad Nuruzzaman, among others.
