Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar on Tuesday (7July) warned that Bangladesh could face a Political crisis if the verdict of the referendum is not implemented without delay.

Speaking at a human chain programme held at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital around 3:00pm, Parwar said the country’s “primary crisis” now lies in the  implementation of the referendum outcome.

“Failure to act on the people’s mandate may push the nation toward political instability,” he cautioned.

The programme was organised by an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, demanding immediate steps to convene the Constitutional Reform Council, implement the referendum verdict, and ensure justice for the July Uprising  killings.

Earlier in the day, alliance leaders submitted a memorandum outlining six key demands to the Speaker of Parliament.

The document was handed over by Rokeya Begum, a reserved-seat MP and mother of Jaber Ibrahim, who was  during the July uprising.

Parwar said the Speaker, as guardian of parliament, has been urged to initiate legal measures in consultation with both the ruling party and the opposition to implement the referendum verdict.

According to him, the Speaker assured the delegation that he would discuss the matter with the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition to help resolve the crisis.

Leaders from various  parties, including the National Citizen Party, Liberal Democratic Party, and Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party, also addressed the gathering, reiterating calls for reforms, accountability, and justice.

The alliance’s six-point demand includes forming a Constitutional Reform Council with a clear and time-bound roadmap, ensuring transparent trials of those responsible for the July killings, implementing governance reforms based on rule of law and human rights, rehabilitating victims’ families, preserving the legacy of the July uprising and opening a July Uprising Memorial Museum to the public by August 5.
