BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has resigned from both his party positions and his post as Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives after being nominated as the party’s candidate for president.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed the resignations on Thursday, saying Fakhrul stepped down from his party and government positions following his nomination for the presidency.
Fakhrul was selected as the BNP’s candidate for the country’s 23rd presidential election at a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee chaired by Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Following the nomination, Fakhrul resigned from his positions as BNP secretary general and a member of the party’s National Standing Committee, as well as from his ministerial post.
Fakhrul became BNP acting secretary general in 2011 and was formally appointed secretary general at the party’s national council in 2016. During his long tenure, he emerged as one of the party’s leading figures and played a central role while former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was imprisoned and Tarique Rahman remained in London.
He was elected from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency in the 13th parliamentary election and subsequently joined Tarique Rahman’s cabinet as Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.
