Bangladesh will observe National Fisheries Week from August 16 to 30 across the country, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman scheduled to inaugurate the programme in Kotiyadi, Kishoreganj.
The prime minister will also present gold medals to 14 individuals and organisations in 13 categories during the opening ceremony.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Aminur Rashid disclosed the plans at a briefing at the Secretariat on Thursday (August 13).
The minister said Bangladesh produced a record 5.1 million tonnes of fish in the last fiscal year. Daily per capita fish availability has now reached 68 grams, exceeding the national nutritional requirement, he said.
The government is also taking steps to provide rice to more than 1.8 million registered fishers and create alternative employment opportunities for them, the minister said.
He added that under the “Jal Jar, Jola Tar” policy, water bodies and haors are being freed for the benefit of fishermen and fishing communities.
According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Bangladesh ranks second globally in inland open-water fish production and fifth in fish production from closed-water aquaculture.
